A solo exhibition of Katie West at Perth Institute of Contemporary Arts, Western Australia
Curated by Eloise Sweetman
17 February - 24 April 2022
We Hold You Close: A Song of Material Intimacy is the latest exhibition by Yindjibarndi artist Katie at the Perth Institute of Contemporary Arts in Western Australia, running from February 17 to April 24, 2022. Curated by Eloise Sweetman, this gentle assembly of textile, sound, and video by West creates an immersive experience, inviting visitors to reconsider their relationship with the natural environment and each other.
The exhibition offers a space of quiet contemplation where visitors can rest, listen, and engage in hands-on activities. Guests are encouraged to sit, sip a cup of tea, and participate in the making of hand-twisted string from repurposed fabric. Throughout the exhibition, this collaborative effort results in an ever-expanding supportive structure, crafted by all who have visited.
We Hold You Close: A Song of Material Intimacy is not only a visual and sensory journey but also a participatory experience, allowing the audience to contribute to the evolving artwork. The exhibition invites individuals to join in the creation of a tangible manifestation of collective creativity and material intimacy.
