Treignac Projet 7 August - 18 September 2021
This Many-Coloured Sheen is a captivating solo exhibition by artist Shanta Rao, curated by Eloise Sweetman. Held at Treignac Projet from August 7th to September 18th, 2021, this exhibition delves into the intricate interplay of form, material, and ecological consciousness. Rao's artistic exploration commences with the mysterious jellyfish, finding residence in abandoned vehicles along the Cassis seaside. The synthesis of scientific inquiry, the artistry of drapery, and the aesthetics of an auto-body shop characterize Rao's transformative process on car bumpers, bonnets, and doors.
Temporal, geographical, political, and aesthetic considerations play a pivotal role in Rao's work, embracing change, mistakes, new information, and desires. Rao draws inspiration from both materials and surroundings, allowing for a dynamic and evolving creative process. Much like the jellyfish adapting to its marine and human-made environment, Rao's artworks embody a certain freedom from categorization, their forms changing based on display conditions, weather, and audience interaction. In This Many-Coloured Sheen, Rao engages with found materials and references from the Treignac project, improvising and collaborating with the exhibition space—a former yarn factory. The reversible works, rich in color, invite viewers on an enjoyable journey, their dynamic nature requiring careful attention and offering ever-changing perspectives. The experience becomes an in-between moment of time, movements, and connections, echoing the transformative nature of Rao's sculptural paintings on the top floor of the old yarn factory.
