In this research, I am looking at how lingering can inform the structure and movement of the exhibition. This research is a progression from my previous exhibition work on concepts of not knowing and intimacy as well as roles of intuition and emotion in curatorship. I am interested to look at the burning of incense as a metaphor for exhibitions and artworks as ones that linger, endure, and gather in a site and then dissipate again. I am following the linger as one that is contemplative, does not know, is curious, is intimate, as philosopher Byung-Chul Han describes, "lingering that de-distances oneself". The linger follows from an intimacy that gathers experience and knowledge through exhibition making, knowledge about the artwork, and its effects on the audience. Incense lingers, the scent, as with the smoke, gathers and moves slowly about a room, the incense requires attendance so it does not start a fire, nor will suffocate all fresh air. I see this as a generative metaphor for the practice of curating and the curators relationship with the artists and the artwork.
This is where I am gathering my research as I go: Lingering as Exhibition
